Norwegian Telecommunications Firm Under Investigation for Alleged Data Sharing with Myanmar Military
The Norwegian telecommunications company Telenor ASA is currently the focus of a heightened investigative effort by Norwegian law enforcement agencies. Authorities allege that the company may have supplied personal data to the Myanmar military regime following the 2021 coup. In a formal search conducted on 15 September at Telenor’s headquarters in Bærum, officers from the Norwegian Police Security Service and the national security police entered the premises to examine evidence related to the alleged data transfer.
Allegations and Investigation
The core of the inquiry centers on the transfer of customer information requested by the Myanmar military after it seized power in early 2021. Reports that surfaced in early 2024 claimed that Telenor handed over client data to the regime, a move that human‑rights organisations and Norwegian media have highlighted as potentially enabling political repression. The military’s request reportedly coincided with a period of heightened tension in Myanmar, during which the junta sought to consolidate control over civil society.
Telenor has publicly stated that it has cooperated with the authorities throughout the investigation. According to company representatives, any disclosures were limited to information required to safeguard the safety of its employees, and were fully mandated by Norwegian law. The chief executive, Sigve Brekke, emphasized that the company’s primary responsibility has been to protect its staff and that it had no other motive for sharing data.
Legal and Financial Context
In response to the allegations, Telenor has initiated legal proceedings against affected customers in Norway. The company intends to pursue compensation claims for individuals whose personal information may have been compromised. Norwegian courts have been notified, and a hearing is anticipated in the near future. Despite the ongoing investigation, Telenor’s financial performance for the previous year remains robust, with revenues from domestic and international operations continuing to support a stable dividend policy.
Commitment to Compliance and Privacy
Telenor’s leadership has reiterated its commitment to compliance with both Norwegian and international standards. The company asserts that its internal controls and legal obligations will guide its actions as it addresses the claims and seeks to ensure that its operations remain aligned with global privacy expectations. While the investigation remains ongoing, the firm maintains confidence in its adherence to regulatory requirements and its dedication to protecting customer privacy.
