Infineon Technologies AG Unveils Its Largest Investment Yet: The “Smart Power Fab” in Dresden
Infineon Technologies AG announced the opening of its “Smart Power Fab” in Dresden, a facility that represents the largest single investment in the company’s history. The new plant, built at a cost of roughly five billion euros, is designed to double Infineon’s production capacity at the Dresden site and will be the world’s largest factory for power‑semiconductor and analog/mixed‑signal chips. The expansion is expected to create about 1,000 direct jobs and to reinforce the Silicon Saxony cluster, which already employs more than 80 000 people.
The chips produced in Dresden are targeted at key emerging markets, including power supplies for artificial‑intelligence data centres, renewable‑energy installations, electric‑vehicle systems and software‑defined vehicles. The plant will use 300‑mm wafers and is intended to operate at an accelerated ramp‑up speed, supported by digital‑twins and artificial‑intelligence–driven process optimisation. The new facility also incorporates environmentally friendly features, such as the use of renewable electricity and closed‑loop water systems that recover a significant portion of the water and energy consumed during manufacturing.
In the broader context, the launch of the Smart Power Fab comes amid a period of rising costs across the semiconductor supply chain and a sustained demand surge for power and analog components driven by AI and electrification. While the industry is experiencing price pressures, the new Dresden plant is positioned to meet the growing need for high‑performance, energy‑efficient chips and to strengthen Europe’s manufacturing independence in critical technologies. The announcement has been welcomed by German political leaders, who view the investment as a signal of industrial resilience and a step forward in the country’s digital‑sustainability strategy.
