Corporate News: Alstom’s Incremental Modernization of Berlin’s U‑Railway Network
Alstom has recently announced the deployment of its new Series J underground vehicles on Berlin’s U9 line, following their initial introduction on the U5. The company has supplied six‑carriage units that are now operating alongside the existing fleet, with plans to add more vehicles in the coming months. The rollout is part of a broader effort to modernise Berlin’s aging U‑bahn system, which currently operates 124 vehicles of the new series and is expected to increase to 170 by the end of the year. Alstom’s introduction of the J series is complemented by its sister line, the JK series, which is being introduced on lines U1 through U4.
The move is expected to enhance the reliability of Berlin’s underground services. Reports indicate that the introduction of the new vehicles has improved on‑time performance, with the U5 line’s punctuality rising from 98.4 percent to around 99 percent since the J series entered service. This improvement reflects a broader trend of increased operational stability as older, more maintenance‑intensive trains are phased out. The deployment also underscores Alstom’s role in providing modern, efficient rolling stock to support the city’s public transport infrastructure.
The company’s involvement in this project highlights its continued commitment to supplying advanced transit solutions that address the needs of growing urban networks. By replacing older models with newer, more reliable technology, Alstom is contributing to a smoother, more dependable service for commuters across several key lines in Berlin.
